Billing policy

It is a requirement under Medicare Australia guidelines to provide informed financial consent to all patients. This information is provided so you can make informed decisions about the care you require and the associated expenses.

Below is a list of the type of consultation and the related expenses charged by Dr Emi Khoo and Dr Richard Lee in year 2024. Please be aware that the fee will be adjusted yearly to keep up with the inflation.

Please note you will need a referral for specialist consultation in order to claim medicare rebate. A referral from a general practitioner (GP) to a specialist lasts 12 months, unless noted otherwise. Referrals from specialists and consultant physicians are valid for 3 months. It is patient’s responsibility to make sure the referral is up to date.

Payment of fee at the time of consultation is required. We can assist you in claiming your Medicare rebate after paying your consultation fee. The rebate from Medicare will go straight back into your bank account. You must register your bank account details with Medicare before your consultation, online or phone Medicare on 132 011.

*** Patients with no Medicare will need to pay the full fee and do their own claim from their private health fund.

Please be advised that if you failed to cancel or reschedule your appointment within 48 hours prior, a penalty fee of $50 will be applied before we will rebook you for another appointment. For new patients, we will require you to pay upfront fee and penalty before we offer you another appointment if you failed to show up without prior notice. Your information may be used for billing purposes including bad debt management. If you do not give permission for the above, please let our receptionist know.

Procedure billing information

Procedures, if required, will be performed at the Sunnybank Private Hospital or Greenslopes Private Hospital and if possible, will be directly billed to the private health fund by Drs Khoo and Lee (no gap payment). If having a combined endoscopy and colonoscopy there will be a $80 gap which will not be covered by your health fund, and if some procedures attract a gap fee, a quote will be provided. After hours emergency attendance by the anaesthetist may incur additional gap payment.

Unless otherwise state, our quotes does not cover services provided by other doctors, such as anaesthetist, radiologists, nuclear physicians or pathologists. In addition it does not cover costs associated with your stay in the hospital or day surgery unit such as pharmacy or physiotherapy.

Anaesthetist fees for upper endoscopies (MBS item numbers 20740 or 20745) or colonoscopies (MBS item numbers 20810) are time based so longer procedures are more expensive. An informed financial consent will be provided by Anaesthetist’s practice prior to the procedure.

Please note any excess associated with private health fund will need to be covered by the patient prior to the procedure. If you are an International patient ( without Medicare) you are required to pay these fees upfront, a receipt will be issued which you may take to your health insurer and claim back.

The Sunnybank Private Hospital has set fees for patients having procedures without private health insurance. We will charge such patients at Medibank Private rates. These fees are generally payable to the hospital before the procedure takes play and may be paid on the day of the procedure by credit card. A detailed list for fees payable for procedures of self-funded patients are available on request.

Patients who are booked for a procedure will receive bowel preparation medication for which they will be charged at the time of the initial consultation.
